The Effects of Barbituric Acid Derivatives on the Formation of Inorganic Phosphate and the Osmotic Fragility of Rabbit Erythrocytes

Abstract
The author studied the hemolytic action mechanism of barbituric acid derivatives such as phenobarbital, barbital, pentobarbital and thiopental on the rabbit erythrocytes. The results were as follows.
1. Barbituric acid derivatives such as phenobarbital, barbital, pentobarbital and thiopental increased the formation of inorganic phosphate in the rabbit erythrocytes in the following order; Phenobarbitals barbital pentobarbital> thiopental.
2. Osmotic fragility of rabbit erythrocytes was increased by the administration of barbituric acid derivatives such as phenobarbital, barbital, pentobarbital and thiopental in the same order as they did in the increase of inorganic phosphate.
3. Blood plasma, dextrose and albumin protected erythrocytes against the increase of inorganic phosphate and the increase of osmotic fragility induced by phenobarbital, barbital, pentobarbital and thiopental, but EDTA did not protect.
